Lajpat Nagar, Machchhi Bhavan, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh 226003
Situated amidst the Bara and Chota Imambara, in the city of Lucknow, is the striking entrance gate called, the Rumi Darwaza. A splendid example of Awadhi architecture, propagated by the Nawabs, it was built in the year 1784. Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula was the patron, under whose guidance, the structure was built.
The Rumi Darwaza stands 60 feet tall, as an icon for the city of Lucknow. It is modelled after the Sublime Porte (Bab-i- Hümayun) in Istanbul. The gate has a large scalloped arch on one face, and three smaller ones on the other. Floral motifs can be found in the ornamentations on the gate. A domed pavilion stands atop the gate and large arcaded structures are symmetrically built around it.
