Location

Saadiyat Cultural District, Saadiyat Island - Abu Dhabi - United Arab Emirates

Info

Origins dating back to 2007, the Louvre Museum opened in November 2017, as a result of France and the United Arab Emirates coming together to develop a new kind of cultural institution. Louvre, Abu Dhabi represents the dynamic nature of the contemporary Arab world, while celebrating the region's vibrant and diverse heritage. Adding a universal concept to the local heritage, the museum focuses on what unites us, stories of human creativity that transcend individual cultures and civilisations, and time or place.

It presents both, ancient and contemporary works of historic, cultural, and sociological interest from around the world. Visitors are guided through a chronological and theme-based display, traversing different periods and civilizations. The museum is not, in any way, a copy of the French Louvre, but has created its own legacy with the help of its counterpart.

Designed by Jean Nouvel on the lagoon island of Saadiyat, the Louvre Abu Dhabi “museum city” covers nearly 64,000 m². With 6,000 m² devoted to the permanent collection and 2,000 m² for temporary exhibitions, it aims to transform the art and cultural scene in the Middle East. Echoing the mosque, mausoleum, caravanserai, and madrasa, it rests on four points of contact and slightly low-slung, it is the embodied in a contemporary style. Pierced with openings to look like interwoven palm leaves, a traditional roofing material in the Emirates, the dome resembles silver lace. Sun filters through the dome like a delicate rain of light, similar to a claustra lattice of Mashrabiyas, reflecting the constant interplay of light and shadow in the country.

Workshops for families continue to make the museum more accessible to children, inviting participants to create their own works inspired by the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s acquisitions. The aim is thus to create a connection with the public and familiarize them with its collection.
