Rajpath Marg, India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi 110001

Centrally placed in New Delhi, stands the 42 meters high, India Gate. Almost similar to its French counterpart, 'Arc-de-Triomphe', the sandstone arch commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers, who sacrificed their lives fighting for the British Army, during the World War I. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers, killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The Duke of Connaught laid the foundation of this heritage site in 1921, designed by Edwin Lutyens and was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by Viceroy, Lord Irwin.

On both the sides of the gateway, 'India' is inscribed, with dates MCMXIV (1914 left) and MCMXIX (1919 right) on its either sides.

Sheltered by the India Gate is another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti, added after India got its independence. Its eternal flame kindles as a reminder of immortal soldiers of the nation, who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. It is guarded 24/7 by soldiers of Indian Army, Indian Navy and Air Force.

Surrounding the monument is a large expanse of lush green lawns, which are a popular picnic spot, accompanied by delicious street snacks.
