Bhangarh Fort, located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district ofRajasthan, is a 17th-century fort. Infamous all over India for being the most haunted place inIndia, even the Archaeological Survey of India has forbidden entrance inside the premises of thefort at night. This haunted ruin of Bhangarh is known to have an eerie and negative aura to it.The Bhangarh fort is an ancient specimen and several legends have attested to the paranormalhappenings within.

It has been erected by Man Singh, and the architecture of the fort resembles the Rajputanastyle. Legends have it that the fort and the surrounding establishments once buzzed with life. Now, no-one is allowed to enter the fort after sunset or before sunrise. The entire landscape issubsumed by a pall of gloom and a chilling hollowness once the last ray of sunlight bids adieuuntil its arrival the next morning. Rumour has it that, the spirits roam in the fort at night andvarious strange noises are heard. Anyone who enters the fort at night would not be able toreturn in the morning. People claim to have heard Bhangarh ghosts scream, voices of womencrying, sounds of bangles in the rooms, and eerie smells after dusk. Ghostly shadows, strangelights, and unusual sounds of music and dance have also been reported.

The Legend Has It

The popular legend behind the Bhangarh Fort claims that Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh wasresponsible for the apocalyptic situation which befell the fort. A local black magician, tantrik Singhia, fell in love with the beautiful princess and tried to bewitch a cosmetic she wassupposed to use. So, when the maid went to buy the cosmetic from the market, the tantrikbewitched it to make the princess fall in love with him, and come right to him. The princess, immediately, smelled suspicion and poured the bewitched cosmetic over a massive stoneboulder, which then supposedly crushed the tantrik to death. Before he breathed his last, hecursed the entire landscape and that no soul would ever be able to live in peace there.Bhangarh Fort has been haunted since and if any villager tries to build a roof, it, apparently, mysteriously collapses.
